Postoperative Instructions

Instructions for post-operative patients

  • Your first post-operative check-up should be in 7-10 days. Call 703.858.5599 within the next few days to make an appointment.
  • After leaving the hospital, you should gradually increase your activities, remembering that you will gain strength by a combination of limited activities and the passage of time. Every patient recuperates at a different rate, so you should not necessarily expect to follow a schedule. Don't be afraid to try things, but stop when you begin to tire. Try to avoid straining or lifting heavy objects.
  • You may take walks, ride in the car, and do light housework as soon as you feel up to it and as long as you are not taking narcotics for pain relief.
  • You may climb steps as necessary, but climb slowly, try to minimize the number of trips at first.
  • You may drive a car after stopping narcotic use.
  • You may take a shower or wash your hair as soon as desired.
  • You may take a tub bath only after advised by Dr. Ayoub.
  • You should refrain from douching and intercourse for 3-4 weeks.
  • You may return to work after your last post-operative appointment or as advised by Dr. Ayoub.
  • Do not be alarmed if you continue to have some bleeding or discharge for several weeks.
  • You may eat what you desire. A mild laxative such as Senokot, Senokot Xtra, or Senokot-S, may be used as needed.
  • Call if you experience fever, chills, increased bleeding, nausea and vomiting or increased pain.
  • If problems or questions arise, please don't hesitate to call. We want to know if you are not doing as well as expected.
